An Online Workshop

with Marilyn McEntyre, PhD
Reframing & Resilience

November 14

10 am - 12:30 pm PT / 1-3:30 pm ET

Some stories remain with us for a lifetime.
But we never return to them from exactly the same place.

As we mature, change perspective, become disillusioned or awakened, or find ourselves persuaded by a wider understanding, the terms in which we tell familiar stories begin to shift. Reframing does not mean denying what happened or giving the past a prettier ending. It means widening the field of vision so that more of the truth can come into view.

On the threshold of Advent—a season of ancient stories and new beginnings—writer and teacher Marilyn McEntyre invites us to explore the creative and spiritual practice of returning to familiar narratives. Working in poetry or prose, we will consider how old stories acquire new layers of meaning as our lives and our historical moment change.

Marilyn’s teaching draws upon journal, memoir, poetry, and personal essay as forms of spiritual practice and, at times, prayer.

Bring a story whose meaning may not be finished.

Cost: $30

Marilyn McEntyre, PhD

Following her successful 2023-2024 online writing courses and in-person writing retreats at St. Columba’s 2025 and 2026 “Be Not Afraid,” Marilyn will continue her focus on personal writing as a spiritual practice—journal, memoir, poetry or personal essay and how it can at times become an important dimension of prayer.

After years of undergraduate teaching, Marilyn now teaches for New College Berkeley, Western Seminary, and in the Forest Dwelling Program at the Oblate School of Theology. She leads retreats and workshops, and lectures on topics related to language, spirituality, and the common good. Marilyn’s books include her latest Start with a Word: On the Craft and Adventure of Writing; Caring for Words in a Culture of Lies, Speaking Peace in a Climate of Conflict, When Poets Pray, Word by Word, and Make a List: How a Simple Practice can Change our Lives and Open our Hearts.
