ST. COLUMBA’S RETREAT HOUSE
St. Columba’s Retreat House is unique! Just an hour north from San Francisco, we are on the edge of the Point Reyes National Seashore in West Marin. Guests tell us that they come for the beauty and serenity as an ‘escape’ from the clamor of a busier world; they uniformly leave with a sense of spiritual renewal and a desire to return again. In fact, many visitors have been returning regularly for more than 50 years. Families have gathered for reunions and celebrations of life. We’ve also ‘been here’ for neighbors who have a need for emergency or holiday guest overflow. During times of emergencies we have served as the designated Red Cross Disaster Shelter for Inverness.
Our Retreat House is a four-story historic 1930’s summerhouse mansion converted into an Episcopal Church in the 1950’s. The bonus of having once been a large residence enabled our small parish to offer a Hospitality Ministry with sleeping accommodation for up to 32 guests. Filled with nooks and crannies — fireplaces and books — soaring ceilings, with walls and floors crafted from knot-free, old-growth redwood, the ambiance offers a sense of timeless rustic charm. No room is alike; all possess their own special charm.
There are many lovely, separate spaces for our guests to ‘spread out’ — whether in solitude or to gather together — indoor and out! As a result the Retreat House is a superior resource for conferences, meetings, workshops and seminars…or quiet time for reflection and meditation. On the recent initiative of our neighbors and local community, an amphitheater dating back 50+ years was cleared and revitalized. Once used by the church and the community for weddings, graduations, outdoor services and music performances, the recent restoration by community volunteers culminated in two weekends of alfresco afternoon Shakespeare performances. Beyond our own beautiful grounds, Tomales Bay State Park and the Point Reyes National Seashore beckon for recreation. Our visitors enjoy wonderful beaches, kayaking, world-class bird watching and a vast selection of great West Marin hiking options.
We offer several worship and meeting spaces, inside and out. Interior worship spaces include our Sanctuary and The Lady Chapel. In 1957 we created an outdoor Chapel on the hill overlooking our forested grounds and Tomales Bay. In the center is a large Celtic Iona Cross. Our 1965 amphitheater has recently been restored by community, parish and retreat volunteers to again serve as a revitalized resource for community events, professional Shakespeare productions, weddings, outdoor meetings and worship services.
St. Columba’s Retreat House can accommodate Individual, Family and Group retreats with a maximum sleeping capacity for up to 32 persons. A combination of rooms vary in size and character. There are four two-bed rooms, two singles, two dorms (sleeping 4 or 6) and a 12-bed bunk room. Bathrooms and showers are located on each floor. The 6-room-dorm has an ‘en-suite’ bathroom. A large self-service kitchen and spacious dining area is available for shared use.
Overnight Retreats: $50 per person per night
Late Check-Out: $10 per person
Day Use: $20 per person
Check-Out: 12 noon
Late Check-out: 3pm
- Individual retreat rooms are assigned on a first come/first served basis. In-person early check-in can often be arranged by phone.
- A NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT is required to secure group reservations for more than 10 individuals.
- In keeping with our goal of providing a quiet and contemplative environment for individual retreats, we have an “ADULTS ONLY” accommodation policy unless a group has secured the entire facility with a reservation prepayment.
- Pets are not allowed in the building. Certified service animals are allowed as specified by law. Please alert us to the need for accommodation at the time you make your reservation.
